Cyber insurance applications ask detailed questions about your IT environment, and the answers affect whether you are approved, what you pay, and whether a claim is honored. BlueKey IT closes technical gaps, documents what is in place, and runs a Kaseya security stack that is pre-approved through Cysurance.
Application and renewal support · Underwriting controls · Evidence and documentation · 200+ customers and 6,000+ endpoints managed
Cyber insurance helps a business pay for the costs of a cyber incident. Insurers price and approve policies based on how likely a loss is, so they ask what controls you have in place. The questions are specific, and in many cases they are checked.
| Coverage type | Examples | Why IT controls matter |
|---|---|---|
| First-party | Incident response costs, business interruption, ransomware and extortion payments, data restoration, and notification costs | Controls such as MFA, endpoint detection, and tested backups reduce both the likelihood and the severity of these losses |
| Third-party | Liability claims from customers or partners, and regulatory investigation costs and fines where insurable | Documented safeguards support your defense and show you took reasonable steps |
| Funds transfer and social engineering | Losses from fraudulent payment instructions, when the policy includes this coverage | Email security, verification procedures, and training address the most common causes |
Coverage, limits, and exclusions differ between policies, and your broker is the right source for advice on them. Our role is the technical side: helping you meet and prove the controls the application asks about.
Market context: Marsh reported that global cyber insurance rates fell 4 percent in the second quarter of 2026, the twelfth straight quarterly decline, with U.S. rates down 2 percent. Competition is high, but insurers still look closely at controls and at how well applicants can document them.
No single list applies to every insurer, but the same controls appear across applications, broker guidance, and underwriting materials. Marsh describes the controls below as having become minimum requirements of insurers. This table shows each one, what insurers usually want to see, and how BlueKey IT helps.
| Control | What insurers usually want to see | How BlueKey IT helps |
|---|---|---|
| Multi-factor authentication | MFA on remote access, email, and privileged or administrator accounts | MFA rollout and enforcement reports across email, VPN, cloud, and admin accounts |
| Endpoint detection and response | EDR on company devices, ideally with active monitoring and alerting around the clock | Managed EDR with 24/7 monitoring and coverage reporting |
| Backups | Regular backups of business-critical data, protected from tampering, with recovery tested | Monitored, encrypted backups, protected copies, and dated restore tests |
| Email filtering and web security | Filtering for phishing, malware, and spoofing | Email security configuration and web filtering |
| Patch and vulnerability management | Regular patching and a process for finding and fixing vulnerabilities | Managed patching and recurring vulnerability scans with tracked remediation |
| Security awareness training | Regular training for all staff, with phishing testing | Ongoing training and phishing simulations with completion records |
| Incident response plan | A written plan that is reviewed and, ideally, tested | Incident response plan drafting and tabletop support |
| Privileged access management | Limited, controlled, and monitored administrator access | Separate admin accounts, least privilege, and access reviews |
| Remote desktop hardening | No direct internet exposure of remote desktop services | External exposure review and secure remote access |
| Logging and monitoring | Logs retained and monitored for suspicious activity | Centralized logging and 24/7 monitoring |
| End-of-life systems | Unsupported systems replaced, or isolated and protected | Asset inventory, lifecycle planning, and compensating controls |
| Vendor and supply chain risk | A process for assessing vendors that touch your data or systems | Vendor inventory and review support |
Applications usually ask where MFA is enforced, not just whether you have it. Remote access, email, and administrator accounts are the areas insurers focus on most often. A partial rollout is a common problem, such as MFA on the VPN but not on administrative consoles. We inventory every place an account can sign in, turn on MFA where it is missing, and produce a report you can use to answer the question accurately.
Traditional antivirus is often no longer enough to answer the endpoint question. Insurers tend to look for EDR on company devices, and active monitoring and response around the clock is viewed as a stronger signal than software that only generates alerts. We deploy managed EDR with 24/7 monitoring and provide coverage reports showing which devices are protected.
Insurers want backups that survive an attack. That means regular backups of business-critical data, protection from tampering so ransomware cannot encrypt or delete them, and recovery that has actually been tested. We run monitored, encrypted backups, keep protected copies, and record restore tests so you have dated evidence.
Phishing and unpatched software remain common ways in. Insurers ask about email filtering, how quickly critical patches are applied, and how vulnerabilities are found and fixed. We manage filtering and patching, run recurring scans, and keep a record of what was found and when it was fixed.
Insurers ask whether staff are trained, whether phishing is tested, and whether you have a written plan for responding to an incident. We deliver ongoing training with simulations, keep completion records, and draft an incident response plan with roles, contacts, and steps. A tested plan is stronger than one that sits in a drawer, so we support tabletop reviews.
Administrator access should be limited, separate from daily accounts, and reviewed. Remote desktop services should not be exposed directly to the internet. Logs should be kept and monitored. We implement least privilege, review external exposure, and centralize logging through our 24/7 monitoring.
Unsupported systems create risk that insurers factor in. We identify them, plan replacements, and apply compensating controls when replacement has to wait. For vendors, we help you list the providers that touch your data or systems and review the ones that matter most.
Insurers and brokers increasingly recognize the security tools and managed service providers their policyholders use. Some offer streamlined applications, credits, or other advantages when a business uses specific security tools or managed service provider programs, subject to underwriting. Cysurance does this for the Kaseya security stack we run.
Our Kaseya security stack is pre-approved by Cysurance. For eligible businesses, that can mean a streamlined application, fewer questions to prove, and less back and forth when you apply or renew.
Pre-approval applies to Cysurance’s program and the policies it offers. It does not replace underwriting, and eligibility, pricing, and terms are set by Cysurance and the policy. Other insurers have their own requirements. When you bring us a quote or renewal, we tell you where our stack applies and which items still need work, and your broker confirms eligibility.
| What you may gain | What still depends on your business |
|---|---|
| Fewer technical questions to document, where a program applies | Your industry, size, and the data you hold |
| Faster, simpler applications on eligible policies | Claims history and how your environment is configured |
| Clear evidence that controls are in place and monitored | Whether every control is enforced across all users and devices |
| A single partner who can answer the technical questions | Final approval, pricing, and terms, which the insurer decides |
The application is a statement of fact about your environment. Insurers can rely on it when they price the policy, and they can look at it again after a claim.
Why accuracy matters: In a 2022 case, Travelers sued a manufacturer after a ransomware attack, saying the application stated that MFA protected administrative and privileged access when MFA was found only on the firewall. The case ended with a consent judgment rescinding the policy. It was a single case and not a statement of law, but it shows why every answer needs evidence behind it.
Questions like “Is MFA enforced for all administrator accounts?” have precise answers. We check the actual configuration and provide the supporting report before anyone signs.
If a control is in place for most users but not all, the answer needs to reflect that. We find the exceptions and either close them or document them.
Save the reports used to answer each question, with dates. If a claim is filed or an insurer asks a follow-up question, you can show what was true when you applied.
Some insurers scan externally visible systems during underwriting and during the policy term, and unresolved findings can affect renewal terms. We run an external review, including vulnerability scanning, so exposed services and outdated internet-facing software are fixed first.
Start with last year’s answers or the new questionnaire from your broker, and mark every technical question.
We verify each control in your environment and identify gaps, partial rollouts, and exceptions.
We implement missing controls such as MFA coverage, endpoint protection, backup protection, and training.
We produce dated reports and documents that support each answer.
Your broker reviews the answers and tells us which items need more detail. We confirm where our stack applies.
We keep controls and evidence current so the next renewal starts from a working baseline.

We review your application or renewal questions and compare each one with your actual environment.
We implement missing controls and produce the evidence behind each answer.
We support the technical side of the application and keep controls and evidence current between renewals.
Each question mapped to the control behind it, with status and priority.
Where MFA is enforced, and any exceptions with a plan to close them.
Which devices are protected and monitored.
Dated evidence that backups exist, are protected, and can be restored.
Scan results and remediation tracking.
Completion reports and phishing simulation results.
A written plan with roles, steps, and contacts.
A dated set of reports and documents you can reference at application, renewal, or claim time.
Support requests follow our standard help desk response times: 1 business hour for critical issues, 2 hours for high, 4 hours for medium, and 8 hours for low priority requests.
MFA is enforced on email but not on remote access, administrator accounts, or backup consoles.
Devices run basic antivirus with no monitoring or response, so the endpoint question cannot be answered well.
Backups run every night, but no one can show a recent successful restore, or the backups are reachable by ransomware.
Remote desktop or old VPN software is reachable from the internet and shows up in an outside scan.
Servers or devices that no longer receive security updates are still on the network.
An incident response plan does not exist, or no one has read it since it was written.
Businesses applying for or renewing cyber insurance, including medical practices, dental offices, accounting firms, law firms, and other professional and service businesses. It also helps companies whose clients ask for proof of coverage and controls. Have an in-house IT team? See co-managed IT. Need ongoing security leadership? See our vCISO packages.
Application support and gap remediation projects are quoted individually. Ongoing controls can be added to a managed IT or co-managed IT plan.
Requirements vary by insurer and policy, but the same controls come up repeatedly: multi-factor authentication for remote and privileged access, endpoint detection and response, secured and tested backups, email filtering, patch and vulnerability management, security awareness training with phishing testing, a written incident response plan, privileged access management, hardening of remote desktop access, logging and monitoring, replacement or protection of end-of-life systems, and oversight of third-party vendors. Marsh describes many of these as minimum requirements of insurers.
No. Controls are underwriting factors, not guarantees. Insurers also consider your industry, size, revenue, claims history, and the data you hold. Strong controls improve your position and can widen your choice of carriers and terms, but approval, pricing, and coverage are decisions each insurer makes.
Yes. Our Kaseya security stack is pre-approved by Cysurance. For eligible businesses, that can mean a streamlined application. Approval, pricing, and terms are set by Cysurance and the policy, and other insurers have their own requirements, so we tell you where it applies and your broker confirms eligibility. We do not promise that any specific policy will accept it.
An inaccurate answer can put coverage at risk. Insurers can seek to rescind a policy when a material misstatement is found, often discovered after a claim. In a 2022 case, Travelers sued a manufacturer after a ransomware attack, saying its application stated that MFA protected administrative access when MFA was found on only some systems. The suit ended with a consent judgment rescinding the policy. It is one case and not a rule of law, but it shows why every answer should be backed by evidence.
Practices vary by insurer, and your broker or attorney can advise on who signs. Whoever signs should rely on a technical review of the actual environment, not memory or assumption. We provide the technical findings and evidence so the answers can be verified before they are submitted.
Some insurers scan externally visible systems during underwriting and during the policy term, and unresolved findings can affect renewal terms. Exposed remote desktop access and outdated internet-facing software are common topics. We run the same kind of external review so you can fix issues before an insurer finds them.
Policies generally combine first-party coverage, such as incident response costs, business interruption, ransomware and extortion payments, and data restoration, with third-party coverage for liability claims and regulatory defense, where insurable. Exclusions, sublimits, and conditions vary widely, so read the policy with your broker.
Market conditions change. Marsh reported that global cyber insurance rates fell 4 percent in the second quarter of 2026, the twelfth straight quarterly decline, with U.S. rates down 2 percent. Your own premium still depends on your risk, industry, and controls.
Start as soon as you know the renewal date. Fixing gaps such as MFA coverage, backup testing, and endpoint protection takes time, and evidence is easier to gather before the application deadline than during it.
No. Your broker or agent advises on coverage and places the policy. We focus on the technical side: implementing and documenting the controls, completing the technical portions of applications, and keeping evidence current.
Yes. Many companies add insurance readiness to a managed or co-managed IT plan so MFA, endpoint protection, backups, patching, training, and documentation stay current between renewals.
Tell us when your policy renews or what your insurer is asking for. We will explain what it means for your environment and put together a clear plan and quote.
